Born in Rio de Janeiro and a graphic design graduate of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), Bruno Lyra has worked extensively in design, film, and documentary production. Since 2005, he has focused his career on the visual arts, beginning his studies at the Parque Lage School of Visual Arts in Rio de Janeiro and deepening his practice through immersive and advanced courses at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, England. He has exhibited his work in cities such as London, Hong Kong, La Paz, Brasília, and São Paulo, and his pieces are held in collections across Brazil and abroad.
Regarding his exhibition at the Fabrik Gallery in Hong Kong: “Lyra translates everyday life into paintings, drawings, and collages. Yet, nothing he creates is figurative or linear. With a highly distinctive style, he builds images using layers of colored acrylic paint, oil, spray paint, markers, stencils, photographs, digital montages, resin, and transparencies. His techniques vary from canvas to canvas. Some works reference his childhood in the Leblon neighborhood, created using maps and satellite imagery of the area as a starting point. His paintings are an explosion of accumulated energy—expansion, creation, and destruction—a universe rendered in color. Through the unfolding of urban structures, the series establishes an intriguing interplay between material, color, and space.”
In recent years, he has immersed himself in ecovillages, permaculture sites, and lush forest environments. He channels these experiences into his paintings, whether by exploring the subjective aspects of the dynamic balance found in forest organisms or by directly incorporating plant-like forms. Abstraction serves as an ally in deconstructing obvious imagery, making way for landscapes that flow from the artist's own imaginative realm.
